Flood Control Failures

My boss periodically sends us these. I think he is trying to emphasize just how important it is that we do our jobs right.

Um, holy cow. Those scared the CRAP out of me. What is it, exactly, that you engineer? Roads? Pipes?

Possibly the videos explain the answer to that question, but I watched them at work where I don't have any sound.

No, no sound.

The top is a culvert that they cut at an angle with the bottom sticking out farther than the top. The water started going under the pipe and caused the cut part to roll up and actually close off the pipe. The video is when the water actually starts to seep around the pipe and dig it out. The second video is a storm drain (a massive one, judging by the size of the manhole cover).

I work for flood control. Mainly I design storm drains, or other structures having to do with runoff and creeks. Right now I'm designing 2 turnarounds and a sidewalk project (our traffic engineer is swamped and got permission for me to help on a few small projects).

I love what I do and the people I work with.

Cool job, seriously! But man - those videos are freaky. Please be careful when you're designing storm drains and turnarounds. :-)
